About James Madison

James Madison is a Tulalip artist whose work bridges tradition and innovation, carrying forward the stories of his Coast Salish heritage while creating contemporary forms that speak to audiences worldwide. A master carver, sculptor, and designer, James works in wood, glass, bronze, and other media, blending traditional Coast Salish design elements with modern techniques and perspectives.

James’s portfolio ranges from monumental cedar totems and carved house posts to glass installations, prints, and bronze sculptures. His works are displayed in museums, cultural centers, hospitals, and public spaces throughout the Pacific Northwest, where they stand as both cultural landmarks and contemporary works of art. Each piece embodies the themes of community, resilience, spirituality, and connection to the natural world.
